Tips for Planning a Kitchen Remodel or Cabinet Upgrade, Part 1

Hi there, and welcome back to the WoodCabinets4Less® blog! Before starting on the actual kitchen renovation or cabinet upgrade, planning every aspect of the project is crucial, rather than just jumping right into it. Last time, we spent some time going over the benefits of ordering sample doors before choosing the cabinets you would like to install in your kitchen or bathroom. No matter what your project entails, if you’re ordering RTA Cabinets, Semi-Custom Cabinets, or Custom Cabinets from us, you will want to order sample doors before settling on a style and finish. Sticking with the planning process, we would like to look at how the layout, style preferences, and other elements of your kitchen can affect its appearance and function, so before you start a kitchen remodel or install new cabinets, here are a few things to consider.

Check the Layout

Unless you plan to completely gut your kitchen, your kitchen’s existing layout will impact the design of your remodel or upgrade. For instance, if your kitchen’s floor plan is L-shaped, the cabinets most likely run across the either the partial or full length of the wall space above the countertops. This floor plan is much more open while providing excellent storage space, which may also allow for the addition of an island. For a U-shaped layout, cabinets are usually featured on two or three walls, providing ample storage space; however, this layout generally limits the amount of standing room. A galley layout is a much narrower kitchen with cabinet space running along the length of opposing walls. Like the U-shaped layout, standing space is limited, but cabinet space is abundant. These are just few of the most common kitchen layouts, and understanding how features in your existing kitchen are laid out can be helpful when planning a renovation or cabinet installation.

Plan Your Budget

Kitchen renovations can range significantly in cost. It’s best to take some time to write out your design ideas and make a list of what you hope to achieve with the renovation. Here are some questions to ask yourself when planning out your project’s budget:

  • What do I love and hate about my current kitchen?

  • What am I you hoping to achieve with my kitchen remodel and/or cabinet upgrade?

  • How will this space be used? Do I plan on using the space to cook and store things or will I also use the space to entertain guests?

  • Do I have plenty of cabinet, closet, and general storage space or could I use more?

  • Do I have enough space in my kitchen to add new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and other features?

  • How does the kitchen connect to other rooms in the house?

  • Is there natural lighting from a window and/or door leading outside?

  • How will the lighting effect my new cabinets and wall color choice? Will it change their appearance?

Asking these questions and making a list of ideas underneath each can help you determine exactly what you want to get out of your kitchen renovation. As you shop around for your materials and decide on which WoodCabinets4Less cabinets best fit your style, make note of the costs. Also, write down what it might cost for a professional cabinet installation, if necessary. You can then establish your budget accordingly so that you know exactly what you have to work with. Keep in mind that things come up and accidents happen during renovations, so it's best to give yourself a bit of leeway in your budget.
